Chinese New Year

10th Feb 2025

2025- The year of the snake

The children in 1st, 2nd and 3rd class have been learning about the Chinese New Year. The listened to the story about the Jade Emperor who once ruled China and who wanted to measure time. He decided to hold a race with some animals found in China. The first 12 animals to cross the river would be rewarded with a year being named after them. The children learned that the 12 animals were: The rat, the ox, the tiger, the rabbit, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the goat, the monkey, the rooster, the dog and finally the pig.

The children enjoyed learning about the different Chinese New year celebrations and customs such as parades, festivals, dragons, lanterns and the giving of red envelopes. They also created some lovely artwork. They can be seen here creating some beautiful Chinese lanterns and working hard in pairs on some tangrams( a traditional Chinese puzzle)

In 2025, the Chinese New Year celebrations begin on 29th of January
